WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA?

Eczema appears as a dry, flaking skin. In older children and adults, a rash usually occurs (and recurs) in only one or a few spots, especially on the front of the neck, the inner folds of the elbows, and behind the knees.

Although the color, intensity, and location of the rash vary, the rash always itches. In older children and adults, intense itching is the main symptom.

WHAT CAUSES ECZEMA?

The exact cause of eczema is complex. It involves the interaction of the immune system and epidermal gene mutations. It is not an allergy. But, people who have eczema DO HAVE more allergies and asthma than people without allergies and asthma. It is also known that certain things in the environment and excessive stress can trigger an exacerbation of eczema.

HOW IS ECZEMA DIAGNOSED?

Eczema can be diagnosed by its appearance and a careful history. Eczema usually starts in early childhood.
